Every material in a Montessori classroom supports an aspect of child development, creating a match between the child’s natural interests and the available activities. Children can learn through their own experience and at their own pace. They can respond at any moment to the natural curiosities that exist in all humans and build a solid foundation for life-long learning.
Multiage groupings are a hallmark of the Montessori Method: younger children learn from older children; older children reinforce their learning by teaching concepts they have already mastered. Students remain with a teacher for three years, providing an opportunity for in-depth and long term learning. This multiage arrangement also mirrors the real world, where individuals work and socialize with people of all ages and dispositions.
Dr. Montessori observed that children experience sensitive periods, or windows of opportunity, as they grow. As their students develop, Montessori teachers match appropriate lessons and materials to these sensitive periods when learning is most naturally absorbed and internalized.
Both primary and elementary children have access to physical education, art, music, and nature on a weekly basis. Montessori education nurtures each child’s individual strengths and interests and we believe this is achieved in many settings. Montessori education encourages children to explore their world, and to understand and respect the life forms, systems and forces of which it consists.
