The Montessori Primary classroom is focused on:
Fostering the growth of functional independence, task persistence and self-regulation.
Promoting social development through respectful, clear communication and safe, natural consequences.
Offering a large variety of materials for the refinement of sensory perception and the development of literacy and mathematical understanding.
Offering opportunities for imaginative exploration leading to confident, creative self-expression.
Unlike some private schools, which strive for very small classes, Montessori values the lessons of community when the size of the class is somewhat larger. Montessori classes for children might include 20–30 students whose ages span 3 years. There is typically one trained Montessori guide and several Montessori classroom assistants guiding the classroom. All members of the community benefit from this set-up. Older students are proud to act as role models; younger ones feel supported and gain confidence about the challenges ahead.
